Newcastle Arts Conference . 2015—2019

MAKE IT—MADE IT Conference was founded by Brett Piva to share support for the arts and design communities of Newcastle with further reach across Australia. Diverse creative speakers from France, America, South Korea, New Zealand and Australian artists were invited to share creative talks.

Each talk was presented with a focus on sharing knowledge and exchanging ideas and practices in the arts, with accompanying satellite events and uniquely curated exhibitions.

MAKE IT—MADE IT Arts Conference continued to excite audiences for five years in support of the arts, cultural diversity, gender equality and youth mental health in Newcastle and surrounding areas.

By its fifth year, having invited speakers from France, USA, South Korea, New Zealand and many Australian major cities and regional towns, MAKE IT—MADE IT Conference grew from 20 attendees to over 200. The event had outgrown two venues to later land at the much grander conservatorium. A perfect theatre and performance space for artists and designers of diverse and interesting customs to share their creative processes, artistic practice, failings and successes.

    MAKE IT—MADE IT Conference had come a long way since its debut event in a run-down warehouse in Newcastle West. Five years on, it saw over 60 artists, makers and designers in relevant fields share knowledge, advice and skills to a growing audience of over 200 attendees in Newcastle.

    Founder, Director, and Curator Brett Piva shared new methods of working in the contemporary creative industries through various channels. Hands-on demonstrations in renowned artist studios, arts law workshops, seminars on moral and ethical footprints, creative youth mental health workshops, artist panel discussions, and documentary screenings, among many others.

  • Youth mental health — Wellness art walks

    In nearby bushland, we gathered with school groups to draw the landscape and learn more about the environment we walked through and the area's indigenous cultural history. Smoking ceremonies, cultural stories and songs about connection to country were shared before finding areas of the environment to document and sketch with the students.

    Assistance and guidance were provided by Gomeroi man Jeremy Coward and Wiradjuri man David Newham alongside Sydney artists and MAKE IT - MADE IT speakers Thomas Jackson, Georgia Hill, Nadia Hernandez and Newcastle artist and event founder Brett Piva.
