2022 . Sydney . Curatorial+Co Gallery

  • Curated by Leslie Fitzsimmons and Brett Piva, who share admiration for each other’s practice through their connection to the Australian landscape. Through LOCUS, they had considered four artists to exhibit alongside who share a similar admiration and connection to place.

Fitzsimmons and Piva have long discussed working together with LOCUS coming to the forefront after a year of discussion and planning.

Moving from Denver Colorado, an immediate affection towards the endless species of Eucalyptus is ever present in Fitzsimmons’ work. The natural landscape of home recently transitioned into contemporary works more derivative of Australian environments through cleverly painted forms in abstraction.

Similarly, Piva continued to explore remote Australian environments further west. His origins along the Murrumbidgee River is representative in many of his glass pieces. Regular sojourns to these environments have now shaped various contemporary works exploring abstraction in paintings, installations and sculpture.

LOCUS represented six exhibiting artists displaying new directions in their work. Painters, photographers, object designers, ceramicists, and sculptors experimented with newly developed practices. A perfect transformative experience for the artists and new audiences to the Gallery.
